  •  Science Outreach Opportunities:

    RISE:

    Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education(RISE) provides educational opportunities and mentoring to children of incarcerated parents. The program was started in 1997 by two Brown University physicians.  Currently there are 140 students enrolled in the program. We plan to organize activities throughout the year with the children involved in the program.

    Our first visit included a lot of toothpicks and gumdrops and an awesome time building bridges.     To see pictures please follow this link.    

     Empowering Your Future Conference

    Empowering Your Future is a one day conference for middle school girls and their parents and teachers. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Advanced Materials Research and the Division of Engineering at Brown. The conference is intended for girls in Grades 8-10 and will expose them to science in a fun and educational environment. Various student sessions will be offered to showcase real life applications of math and science. This year the conference will take place on the 4th of November from 9am to 3pm.  SWE members will have the chance to conduct one workshops.     Be an Engineer Workshop with SWE-NESS at the Providence Children's Museum

    Be an Engineer Workshop is our new outreach for elementary school age level students This three-hour workshop is held on the Saturday before National Engineers Week (NEW) at the Providence Children's Museum, and serves as our public NEW kickoff event. It is a hands-on engineering workshop for kids to learn about five different engineering disciplines.

    Briefly, kids may rotate through the stations surrounding the room, learning about electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and software engineering by doing hands-on activities with a female professional or student engineer as station manager.

    Meet the engineering faculty over cookies, tea and coffee.

  • Seminar Series:

    Speakers. Workshops. Graduate School Information. Leadership and Team Work. How to get an internship? Are just some of the topics we are going to tackle over the course of the academic year. Come learn more about these topics at the Seminar Series organized by SWE and the Division of Engineering at Brown.

  •  Attend National and Regional Conferences:

    SWE  National Conference

    Thanks to the support of the Division of Engineering, the Dean of the College Office and Sarah Doyle Women's Center 4 students were able to attend the SWE National Conference held in Kansas City, MO between the 12th-14th of October.   

     SWE Regional Conference

          The 2007 SWE Region F conference is being held at Notheastern University on April 14-15th, 2007. If            you want to participate please email us.
